Do young children and seniors get discounted prices?

Some companies offer different ticket categories and prices depending on the age of the passenger.

Most websites require you to choose the appropriate type in order to benefit from the discount, but with Openferry you choose the age of the passenger first and the correct price is calculated for you automatically.

Can I get a student discount?

In some cases ferry companies do offer student discounts during periods throughout the year. Most of the time, student discounts apply only to students from local universities.

If you have chosen a student discount, make sure to bring your student card with you as you will be asked to show it when boarding. If you fail to provide it, the ferry company may charge you for a full priced ticket.

Are tickets cheaper if I book earlier?

Yes! Ferry companies release early booking tickets in advance which are offered at lower rates than usual.

Remember though, early booking tickets like Super Economy and Special Economy most of the time have different cancellation policies. Most of the time, they are non-refundable and non-amendable. With Openferry we do our best to update the ticket policies so you are able to know when a ticket you are considering to buy is non-refundable.

Have a look at this guide to see how you can spot a ticket with a custom policy.

Do ferry ticket prices change?

Ferry companies provide a range of seat selections priced at different rates. These prices may be different depending on the season, trip and ferry. Openferry provides up-to-date pricing straight from our providers, to ensure that you get the best possible price combinations.

If you are wondering whether the ticket price that you paid for a specific seat type will change closer to the date of travel, then the current answer is no (Ferry companies have not yet adopted airline pricing strategies). The only thing that may happen is that your seat type may become sold out, and then a more expensive seat type becomes the next possible option.

Is a return ticket cheaper than a single?

Very often ferry companies provide a discounted price when booking a return ticket in the same reservation. In order to benefit from this discount, make sure you book a return trip in the same reservation otherwise the discount cannot be applied!

Why did my payment fail?

If your payment has failed is likely because of one of the following reasons:

  1. Insufficient funds
  2. CVC error
  3. Authentication error (3D secure error)
  4. Expiry details error

In every case you are able to go back and update your details and re-attempt your booking.

Rarely you may encounter an unknown payment error. In that case you will be able to create a support request and speak with a representative to get more insight on why your payment did not go through.

My booking failed, have I been charged?

During the booking process we hold the reservation value before we attempt the booking. This is a temporary hold, and once the booking is processed successfully we capture the amount.

If you experience a booking error, the amount that was hold is automatically cancelled/refunded. In most cases you will see the amount back in your account right away. Depending on the bank that you use, the funds may take a little longer to re-appear. If you do not see the funds back in more than 24 hours, please get in touch with us and we will provide you with a code that you can share with your bank to release the funds.

Can I pay with an AMEX card or an international card?

Of course! But please bear in mind that AMEX and international cards are much more expensive to process than the more common VISA and MasterCard methods. For that reason, if you do wish to pay with an AMEX or international card, there will be an OPC charge added to your booking which will be in the range of 1.0-2.0%. When you add your card in the payment summary, you will be able to see exactly how much you are being charged for the OPC.

Openferry also accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay for payments as well.

Do I pay any extra fees when I book with Openferry?

Openferry directly gets the ticket prices straight from our providers and ferry companies. No markup is added on the ticket prices as we believe in an open and transparent relationship with our customers (it is in our name). All the prices that you see on our platform are exactly the same as the prices you will see on the ferry company websites.

During the payment stage we add a small service fee (€0.50 or 2.5%, with a max fee of €5.00 per booking, or the equivalent in the currency that you are paying in) to cover the operational cost of our system which allows our customers to benefit from a lot of features that no other site currently supports such as:

  • Getting the best possible cancellation policies and being able to cancel your ticket automatically. That means you can even cancel your reservation on a Sunday when all offices are closed.

  • Getting notified of any changes to your itinerary right away
  • A lot of more features that can all fit in your pocket on our mobile app so that we are always there to help when you need it the most
